Maine Mike - Rotting Out

Hey Mike, how’s things going over your side of the pond? You working at the minute or are you still chilling big time at Chateaux Harder?

—-Hello! Things are going great in my little world, as for the whole US…I think we are hurting big time. Right now I am at work (yes! getting paid to screw around.). I really enjoy my job, although most people think I hate it. I would never do something that I did not want to do. Right now the Chateau is recovering from a party last night. The cops were called and we received a warning. Oh well.

Rotting Out seem have to gotten a bit more recognition in terms of playing bigger shows since I last spoke to you, is this part and parcel to the B9(haha) or do you think more kids are opening up to the more (genuinely) pissed off side of hardcore again?

—-This is due to a mix of things. Right now is a great season for hardcore in Southern California. As soon as it starts to get into the summer months, shows start popping up. Right now there are not that many bands around here that are at our level. What I mean by that is a band having a demo and not being signed to a label. We tend to get on a lot of shows to support touring bands, which I love. As for the B9, and the internet in general, I tend to push our name a lot. I try to join message boards all over the world just to let people know who we are. I think you are right that kids are being drawn more towards pissed off bands. I think its funny when kids think Ceremony and Trash Talk invented fast, pissed hardcore. I love those bands, but I hate being put into that category.

I’m not too familiar with the SoCal scene. So who should we be looking out for from there in terms of bands/zines? Is there anyone in particular besides yourselves that you’d like to tip your hat towards?

—-The SoCal scene is amazing right now. There are so many great bands. I would first like to mention Pressure. They just had a split 12” come out with Colin of Arabia. You can pick it up from 6131 Records. My friend Tim, who plays in Pressure, did a zine called Black Dog. He is working on his second issue right now. There is also Born 2 Hate zine which is 100% worth checking out. As for bands, oh man, how much space do you have? We have Judas, Downpresser, Creatures, Ability, Alpha & Omega, Lone Wolf, Lewd Acts, Brainfreeze, Masterpiece, Badmouth, Off Track, Inert, End Note… the list goes on and on.

Do you think the uprising of booking agents and smaller bands relying on them has detracted from the whole ethos of what hardcore was about? Like, working your ass off and booking your own tours to get where you want to be etc?

—-I can only speak for myself on this matter. I like to make sure I have a hand in every show we play. I do not think I would like having a booking agent, ever. I think it does take away from that “classic” feeling. One thing I hate about booking shows is no ones likes to talk on the phone. Everyone emails or messages through myspace. I like to talk to a person, build a relationship and get to know the person. Oh well, I guess times change.
